Photographer Behind the Lens ~ Amy Guenther {Sweet Little You Photography}

This week we are featuring the amazing Amy from Sweet Little You Photography as our Photographer Behind the Lens!

Share a little about you...

We’re two sisters from Iowa. We both have two kids. We’re only 17 months apart, and we’ve been best friends our whole lives. A lot of people don’t realize there are actually two of us, and our studios are two hours away from each other. Our posing, shooting, and editing style are just so similar that people can’t really tell the difference.

How did your photography career begin?

I (Amy) started the business about 5 years ago. My oldest son was a year old, and I had always taken his photos as a hobby. I majored in studio art in college and I was a graphic designer at the time, so it wasn’t too big of a stretch for me to transition to photography. I persuaded Lindsey to get into the business with me about a year later.

What do you love most about photography?

We never get bored with newborns. We always look forward to snuggling a new baby and coming up with unique setups for each new little client. We love teaching workshops and one-on-one mentoring. It’s so fun to watch our students grow and see how much progress they can make after just one class.

How would you describe your style?

Earthy, natural, dreamy

Share with us your all-time favourite image, and why?

This is a photo Lindsey took right after I met my 2nd child. I didn’t get birth photos of my oldest, and I really wish I had. As much as I love newborn photos, I think birth photography is so important. They give you something to look at to remember the experience. It’s amazing how much you forget about labor.

Share a sneak peek inside your camera bag! What is your favourite lens and why?

For newborns, we both shoot with a Canon 5d Mark III, Sigma Art 50 1.4, Sigma Art 35 1.4, and Canon 100 2.8L. My favorite lens right now is the sigma art 35.

What’s inside your editing toolbox? What post processing tools do you love the most?

For post processing, we use our own presets and a few finishing actions in Photoshop. The set we use and sell is called “The Baby Soft Workflow”, and it can be found on our website :)

For a bit of fun…. share an image from your first paid session and from your most recent session! What has contributed most to your development as a photographer?

I like this example because I’m actually using the same blanket, believe it or not! I’m a visual learner, so I’ve really just spent a few years taking it all in, and studying other people’s images I love.

What would be your #1 tip that you would give to new photographers?

Don’t spend all your money on props right away! The most important first step is learning how to actually use the equipment you have, learn about lighting, and learn some posing techniques. You really don’t need much starting out.
